Waterfront concert features country duet
BOWDOINHAM — Country duet Hope Hoffman and Jim Tolles will give a free outdoor concert featuring Appalachian folk heritage Sunday, June 21. They will perform fiddling and songs from bluegrass, Carter family androots-based originals from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the gazebo at downtown Bowdoinham’s waterfront park, at Routes 125 and 24.
Hoffman plays for contra dances, as well as solo fiddle for barn dances, and leads sessions for children’s museums and festivals featuring fiddle music, creative movement and folk dance.
Known for her warm and personable performances, she has been a professional musician and music teacher in Maine for several years. Earlier this month, she opened a studio space and art gallery on Bowdoinham’s Main Street. She is also the director of Free Grange Productions, which promotes local foods through music (www.freegrange.org).
Hoffman’s album of original tunes, “Infinite Winter Squash: New Maine Fiddle Music,” was described by Maine fiddler Greg Boardman as “inviting, warm, energized and straight ahead, with a bit of mischief thrown in.”
Tolles brings guitar, banjo, vocals, and original songwriting to the duo. As a recording artist with Capitol and Rounder records, his past musical projects include performing and songwriting with Goose Creek Symphony and Breakfast Special.
His self-produced albums of traditional and original compositions include: “Magic Truck String Band’s Voyage of the Magic Truck” (old-time and contra dance music) and “Jim Tolles and Magic Truck’s Hard For To Love” (old-time music). He teaches music in Woolwich.
