FARMINGTON – Farmington Recreation is taking registrations this week for several summer youth programs. Spaced throughout the summer, many of these programs fill quickly.

The Wading Pool swim program will be held in two sessions, June 22 to July 17, and July 20 to Aug. 14, for ages 3 to 7. Each session offers daily, weekday lessons at the pool at Hippach Field.

Two additional beginning level swim classes will be offered from 11 a.m. to noon at the pool for older students who would normally participate in the Sumner P. Mills swim program.

The Hippach Field Playground program for ages 7 to 11 begins June 22. Structured activities and free play are offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, rain or shine, at the Field House at Hippach Field.

This is the 30th season for the Farmington Recreation Department track team. This program for ages 6 to 15 helps youth develop skills and the discipline necessary to compete in a variety of track and field events. The program begins June 20 and runs through Aug. 8. Competition is separate for boys and girls, and practices are held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays at Mt. Blue High School. Registration for this program begins at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Farmington Community Center.

The adventure of traversing local natural terrain is the basis for the Mountain Biking Challenge offered from June 22 to 25 with instructor Greg Veayo. The class, for ages 10 to 16, is a beginner to intermediate level mountain biking opportunity. Daily rides begin and end at Hippach Field with rides lasting from 9 a.m. to noon.

A three-week tennis program takes place again at the Hippach Field tennis courts each Tuesday and Thursday morning. Participants, ages 7 to 12, meet for one-hour classes to learn and practice basic strokes. There are two sessions for this program, June 23 to July 9, and July 21 to Aug. 6. Classes are held at 8:30 for 7- to 9-year-olds and at 9:45 a.m. for 10- to 12- year-olds.

Youngsters, ages 8 to 12, interested in learning the basics of golf swings, rules and scoring may register for Introduction to Golf. Occurring June 30 through July 16, it is held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Walton’s Mill Pond Park and then at the Sandy River Golf Course in New Sharon. The recreation department has golf clubs available but class size is limited.

The 22nd year of baseball skills instruction, the Paul Blauvelt Baseball Program, begins June 30 and continues through July 16. Offered for ages 5 to 15, the program helps youngsters work on and improve their game.

The program is divided into four divisions based on ages. It will run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting at 9 a.m. for 5- 7-year-olds, 10 a.m. for 8- and 9-year-olds, 11 a.m. for 10- and 11-year-olds and 1 to 2:30 p.m. for 12- to 15-year-olds.

The basics of lacrosse for students entering grades four, five and six begins July 6 and is held at 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through July 22 at the Hippach Field.

Preseason soccer camp begins Aug. 3 for grades one to eight. The four-day soccer camp is devoted to skill development. It takes place at Hippach Field starting at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
