MEXICO – Selectmen on Wednesday will hold a discussion on the number of buildings the town now owns and a potential plan for the future of the town offices.

The special workshop was triggered by two recent occurrences – residents voted to accept the former SAD 43 central office building next to the town’s Mexico Recreation Center earlier this month, and the former Knights of Pythias Hall has recently come onto the real estate market.

The three-story hall is between the current town office building and fire department on Main Street. Also on the town’s parcel is the Mexico Public Library.

Madigan believes the entire town parcel on Main Street could be a valuable piece of commercial property, particularly if the town bought the former hall.

“It might be in the town’s best interest in long-range planning,” Madigan said.

The former SAD 43 central office, built around 1960, could then become the site of municipal offices.

But that is just one thought, Madigan said.

Selectmen will begin discussion on all five of the current town buildings Wednesday. They could decide to sell the former central office as well. Or make some other choice for the future of the building.

The board’s decision will likely go before voters for final approval. Also, public hearings will be held prior to that vote.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the town hall.
