LEWISTON – New England Celtic Arts in partnership with the Franco-American Heritage Center will present Chicago’s popular Irish band Bua at three concerts. The quintet’s sound has been described as “a throwback to the playing of the 1960s and 1970s, keeping the music down the path of tradition.”
Bua will play Tuesday, June 30, at the Franco center; Wednesday, July 1, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage; and Thursday, July 2, at Lakeside Theater in Rangeley. The event at Skye Theatre will be its annual Strawberry Shortcake Night.
Taking its name from the Irish Gaelic word for victory, Bua has quickly risen to be one of America’s premier traditional Irish music ensembles.
At Bua’s instrumental heart is Chicago-born fiddler Chris Bain, who grew up in a musical household that often played host to touring bands from Ireland and the United Kingdom. Also in the band are Seán Gavin’s, whose driving style on flute and uilleann pipes reflects his immersion in Irish music from a young age; bodhrán player Jackie Moran, who has toured with such renowned names as Riverdance, the Trinity Irish Dance Company, the Drovers and Ensemble Galilei; guitarist Brian Miller, whose tune backing and song accompaniments have earned him a solid reputation as a gifted guitarist; and Brían Ó hAirt, whose evocative voicee has earned him acclaim as the youngest and only American to become a champion All-Ireland singer.
Concerts will begin at 7 p.m. There will be a preshow jam at 6:15 p.m. at FAHC and at Skye when audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam for a few minutes with the artists.
Tickets are $10 at the door for concerts at the Franco center and Sky Theater. For tickets, call 689-2000 or go online to francoamericanheritage.org; or call Skye at 562-4445. Lakeside Theater tickets are $10 in advance, $12.50 at the door. Advance tickets may be purchased at the theater, online at rangeleymovies.com or by calling 864-5000.
