PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Police say a 23-year-old driver faces charges for allegedly striking a tow truck operator with his side-view mirror on the Maine Turnpike after narrowly missing a Maine State Police cruiser.

Trooper Nathan Jamo told the Portland Press Herald he called for a tow truck Friday night after arresting a motorist in Portland for driving on a suspended license.

Jamo said his cruiser lights were flashing while Robert Sanborn of B&B Towing pulled the car onto his flatbed truck. That\’s when a pickup truck driver traveling an estimated 40-45 mph nearly hit Jamo\’s car before striking Sanborn with the vehicle\’s side-view mirror — knocking Sanborn forward.

The driver, Derrick Hambleton of Alfred, was charged with operating under the influence and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. Jamo said Sanborn is doing fine.
