Nelson J. Mahar

1924 – 2009

RUMFORD — Nelson J. Mahar, 85, died Thursday, June 25, at the Rumford Hospital. He was a resident of Dunton Street in Rumford.

He was born in Rumford, on March 19, 1924, a son of the late John P. and Elizabeth (Keenan) Mahar. He was a graduate of Stephens High School in Rumford with the class of 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with Company B 568th SIG as a Medical Tech. He worked as a mail carrier for the Rumford Post Office for 30 years.

He was a member of the Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion, Robert Shand Post 1641, VFW and was also a communicant of the Parish of the Holy Savior, St. Athanasius-St. John Church. He was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed summers at Concord Pond and he also loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was married in Rumford, on May 8, 1948 to Medora “Dodie” Soule who survives of Rumford. Other survivors include two sons, Michael and his wife, Gail, of Kennebunk and Stephen and his wife, Linzee, of Eliot’ a daughter, Kathryn Mahar of Nashua, N.H.; two grandchildren, Shawn Mahar of Bozeman, Mont., and Sarah Yerxa and her husband, Chris, of Arlington, Va.; a brother, Louis Mahar of Somersworth, N.H.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, James, John and William; and two sisters, Bertha Tanguay and Edna Gironda.
