100 years ago, 1909

Several motor boat races besides other aquatic sports are being arranged for Sabattus on the afternoon of July 5. There will be five motor boat races, those for one-and-a-half horse power engines, and for two, three, five and six horse power boats. Besides this, there will be a tug-of-war between teams composed of the cottagers and the villagers, and a rowing race. Martin’s Point is one of the most delightful spots in Maine, being cool and beautiful. It is an ideal spot for a picnic.

50 years ago, 1959

Last month was the rainiest June since 1954 and one of the rainiest Junes on record. While the rainfall didn’t set a new record, it was spread over 20 days in the month and out of the 30 days in June only seven were clear so that Twin City residents began to despair of seeing the sun again. While the rainfall replenished reservoirs throughout the state, it slowed down the growth of crops, delayed planting and threatened some crops with rot and mildew.

25 years ago, 1984

Androscoggin County commissioners are expected to begin the second phase of a $100,000 building restoration project Tuesday when they award a bid for roof repair and other work to restore the 125-year-old County Building in Auburn. The commissioners are scheduled to award the bid at their regular meeting Tuesday at the County Building. The commission received only two bids for the project — one from Gladu Roofing Co. of Lewiston and the other from St. Hilaire Roofing and Restoration Co. of Auburn.
