As a Republican, it is a sad state of affairs when considering who to choose to run for president in 2012. But there is a bright light here in Maine.
Sen. Olympia Snowe has provided the framework for the Republican Party and what it needs most. Republicans have a contender in Snowe, but chose the media darlings of Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin, who rather like to play in front of the cameras.
Instead of relying on intellect, Republicans are leaning to those people who foster the one-sided idea that conservatives and liberals are at war.
Republicans should consider a more compromising stance. Snowe seems to be willing to listen to both sides. McCain and Palin have tried to make conservatives into a firebrand simply trying to control what issues are voted on. That makes people think that the Republican Party is close-minded  and embraces neo-Nazi tactics of limiting speech.
Conservatives do not need to define the Democrats as socialists. We can work together.
Party leadership looking for reform should sponsor a viable candidate such as Snowe to be the front-runner for 2012. Sen. Snowe represents the better plank and parts of the party.
I am hoping the GOP will embrace her and turn the party around.
