100 years ago, 1909

At the adjourned meeting of the Lewiston school board last evening the difference in the cost and heating value of hard and soft coal was considered at some length. The committee is to advertise for bids for amounts of both and to report to the board. Irving C. Weeks of Watertown, Mass., was elected sub-master in the high school and Florence E. Osborne teacher of Latin and Greek. Several transfers of teachers were made and a number of training school junior pupils elected.

50 years ago, 1959

The Lewiston Board of Health and Welfare yesterday received a request for garbage collections on Rachel Boulevard and tabled the matter for investigation.

Health-Welfare Director Robert Y. Baillargeon said he believes the city truck goes by Rachel Boulevard while picking up on its Old Greene Road route, but he suggested tabling the matter until a check is made to determine what the existing collection program for the area consists of.

Residents of four houses on Rachel Boulevard currently carry their garbage to the intersection of the Old Greene Road where it is picked up the board was told.

25 years ago, 1984

New England Telephone says it is expanding and improving telephone service in Auburn.

Steady commercial and residential growth in the area has increased the demand for service and to meet this demand crews are installing seven miles of aerial and buried cable and associated equipment along Summer Street and West Auburn Road. In addition, six subscriber Loop Carrier Systems are being placed in the area.
