Mary Allen Chaisson of Harpswell and Christine Higgins of Readfield will display their artwork from July 18 through Aug. 7 at Stadler Gallery in Kingfield. In her "Abstract Journeys" exhibit, Chaisson shows many pieces of cloth that have been painted, dyed and bleached, altered by resist pastes and thread, and cut and sown together as a quilt. She started her artistic explorations by designing and making mod dresses in the ’60s. The piece, above, is titled "April." In "Nature Abstracted," Higgins exhibits her textural print monotypes, an example at left. She alters the surface of her handmade papers by collage additions, ink and drawing, which allow color to leave expressive marks. Her plates of various sizes are run through the press many times, each time enabling her to amplify or cover the layers of watercolor, acrylic paint, oil-based ink and gold composite leaf. An artists reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 25. The exhibits will be on view daily from noon to 4 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, visit www.stadlergallery.com.
