Dear Sun Spots: I am a 16-year-old girl who wants to learn how to box. Are there any gyms in the Lewiston-Auburn area that I could attend to get boxing lessons? And, if so, how much would it cost per lesson? — E.D.

Answer: You’re in luck.

For $25 a year, anyone can join the “Gamache Boxing Club,” which meets at the Lewiston Armory on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights at 5:30 p.m. But you have to get there a little earlier to get in. The boxing sessions usually last about two hours. Joe Gamache Sr., Joey’s dad, is one of the trainers. The other trainer is Scott Frost. Gamache is usually there Mondays and Tuesdays.

For more information, you can contact Gamache Sr. at 268-2119 or Scott Frost at 782-1621.

The Portland Boxing Club on Allen Avenue in Portland also offers boxing lessons, but right now there is a waiting list for students. The club, which operates solely through donations, sponsors a scholarship fund for its registered athletes. Scholarships are granted based on an athlete’s academic record and ability to succeed in school, according to the club’s Web site.

The Portland Boxing Club’s mission is to provide youngsters and young adults with a positive alternative route to crime through sport. The club supervises all members during meetings, training and competition, including registered athletes and coaches. For more information about the club, or for specific pricing and lesson schedule, you can call 761-0975.

And, a little farther south, the Southern Maine Boxing Club on Adams Street in Biddeford also offers boxing lessons. That club can be reached at 286-9694. And Jass Fitness Machine Co. in South Berwick also offers boxing lessons. They can be reached at 698-1337.

Dear Sun Spots: Seven years ago, on July 18, 2002, my son Aaron Devoe was shot and killed while sleeping in his camper at Allen Pond Campground, by a total stranger, for unknown reasons.

I was too shocked and grief-stricken at that time to speak at his funeral. Now, I wish to thank all who came to the funeral. The place was packed to standing-room only. It meant a lot to me and my two surviving sons that so many came in support and comfort.

I am pretty sure many of them who were there read Sun Spots, so to all of you: Thank you and God bless you all.

With heartfelt gratitude — Jeanne Langelier and family
