PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – A Palmyra man who confessed to the shooting death of a man 14 years ago in Portland has been ordered to serve 10 years in prison.

Steven Cutting was originally charged with murdering 36-year-old William Greenwood of Westbrook, but he pleaded guilty to manslaughter. A judge on Friday ordered Cutting to serve 10 years of a 20-year sentence.

Prosecution and defense lawyers agreed that the case wouldn’t have been solved if Cutting hadn’t come forward and accepted responsibility.

Investigators said Cutting was never a suspect until he allegedly confessed his involvement to a relative, who notified police. Cutting told investigators that he picked Greenwood up while hitchhiking and shot him after the two got into an argument.
