Raymond H. Snyder

1922 – 2009

AUGUSTA – Raymond Henry Snyder, 87, a resident of West Road, Litchfield, died early Saturday morning, Aug. 22, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

He was born May 22, 1922, in Hardwick, Mass., the son of Guy and Eva J. (Lyman) Snyder. He attended the Litchfield Grammar School and Litchfield Academy. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942, and served during World War II in Normandy, Central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland. On Sept. 18, 1946, in Wales, he married Ruth Arlene Sherman. She passed away on Jan. 22, 2000. He drove trucks for 23 years for Akers and Chrysler in Auburn. Raymond also drove trucks for Ernest Purrington of Richmond for 13 years and was also a self-employed farmer. Raymond was a member of the American Legion Post 181 in Litchfield. He enjoyed playing pool and cards, fishing, hunting, attending stockcar races and building houses with and for family members.

He is survived by two sons, William G. Snyder and his wife, Diane, and Charles R. Snyder and his wife, Sandra, both of Litchfield; three daughters, Virginia A. Pulk and her husband, Larry, of Beverly Hills, Fla., Nancy L. Blaisdell and her husband, Ronald, of Wales and Barbara S. Rolfe of Litchfield; four sisters, Dorothy E. Sherman and her husband, Ralph, Marjorie L. Ellis and her husband, Wesley, Mary E. Ames and her husband, Elmer and Eleanor Jean Perry and her husband, Roxy, all of Litchfield; and 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Glenn Snyder; son-in-law, David Rolfe; grandson, William Snyder; and great-granddaughter, Jaylee Jenkins.
