Iona E. Washburn

1936 – 2009

LEWISTON – Iona E. Washburn, 73, formerly of 359 Garfield Road, Auburn, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Russell Park Rehabilitation and Living Center surrounded by her family following a long illness.
She was born in Harpswell, on March 8, 1936, the daughter of Harvey D. and Addie E. (Wilson) Sanford and had been a resident of this community for most of her life.
She was educated in Orr’s Island schools and was a graduate of Brunswick High School in 1954. Following her education she moved with her family to Auburn. She was employed as a secretary at Knapp Shoe. She met and married her husband, Robert Washburn, and started their family. They raised four children that she was always proud of. In her later years she was employed at St. Francis Halfway House in New Auburn.
She enjoyed knitting, gardening, swimming at the ocean, was an avid reader and loved dogs. She was an admirer of our 35th president, John F. Kennedy.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Washburn, whom she married on Dec. 23, 1955, of Lewiston; three sons, Greg Washburn and his wife, Lucie, of Lewiston, David Washburn and his fiancée, Michelle Jenness, of Auburn and Stephen Washburn and his wife, Angella, of New Gloucester; one daughter, Rhonda Washburn of Auburn; one sister, Leoline Morgan of Brunswick; six grandchildren, Michael, Jasen, Christopher, Josh, Miranda and Justin; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a niece, Irene Brown.
