KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals manager Trey Hillman will be back next season.

Hillman, in his second year as Royals manager, learned this week that general manager Dayton Moore wants him back in 2010 despite the team’s struggles this year.

Kansas City opened the season 18-11 and had a three-game lead in the AL Central before a series of injuries and inconsistencies sent the team into a free fall. The Royals entered Friday’s game against the Angels with the AL’s worst record at 51-82.

Kansas City has been hit hard by injuries, losing shortstop Mike Aviles and center fielder Coco Crisp for the season and third baseman Alex Gordon for three months because of hip surgery.

Moore recently signed a contract extension through 2014.
