FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — As he enters just his second season in the NFL, linebacker Jerod Mayo has been elected by his teammates as a defensive captain.

The designation shows the level of respect Mayo has earned as he prepares to take on a greater leadership role in a defense that has lost several veterans, including Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel and the recently traded Richard Seymour.

Mayo was the Defensive Rookie of the Year for 2008.

Nose tackle Vince Wilfork will serve as the other defensive captain, while quarterback Tom Brady and wide receiver Randy Moss were re-elected as offensive captains.

Sam Aiken will serve as New England’s special teams captain. He replaces longtime captain Larry Izzo, who was not re-signed by the team after the 2008 season.
