LEWISTON — An effort to rewrite Lewiston’s zoning codes to make them easier to understand gets a public review Monday.

The Lewiston Planning Board is scheduled to review a new land use and zoning code table, which will show how big buildings can be in different zoning districts.

A second table shows what kind of uses are allowed in various zoning districts.

“It’s going to make our job much easier,” City Planner David Hediger said. They would replace 30 pages of land use rules.

It also gives staff a chance review some ordinances and find areas where they don’t agree.

“So there has been some tweaking along the way, fixing some errors that just hadn’t been noticed before,” Hediger said.

The city Planning Board is scheduled to review both tables and take public comment at its meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

It’s part of a larger zoning code review that staff has been working
on since 2007. The Planning Board hosted two August discussions about zoning code changes.

The first considered
letting developers divide larger rural lots into smaller parcels as
long as they devote larger chunks to open
space. That’s supposed to promote a more rural area in Lewiston’s
outskirts.

A second meeting discussed doing away with the Suburban Residential zoning
district to promote new housing development around two Lewiston elementary schools,
McMahon school and the new Geiger school.
