But for the fact that both trains were moving slowly, many passengers on the Bar Harbor train due here at 3:47 p.m. would have been seriously injured in the head-on-collision which occurred Saturday afternoon at Leeds Junction. An extra freight out of Lewiston was backing on to a side track as the Bar Harbor train came along. The engine of the express left the rail and threw freight cars over an embankment. Several passengers were shaken up and Engineer Butler of the express was slightly injured.
50 years ago, 1959
A $7,000 expansion project was announced last night by Victor News Co. of 50 Ash St., well-known Lewiston newsdealers.
Co-owner Philip St. Pierre reported the firm, in a move to provide additional space, will renovate the second floor of its present quarters and work is scheduled to get under way Monday.
Victor News Co. has been in operation at its present address the past six years. The firm is run by Philip St. Pierre and E. Philip H. St. Pierre.

A representative of the National Sheriff’s Association is auditing the operation of the Androscoggin County Jail, and Sheriff Joseph P. Laliberte says the report will be used as the basis for improved jail management.
Within 30 days of the completion of the audit study, Laliberte will receive a report that he said will show “if we are good, and if we are, what we are doing right, and if we are bad, why we are bad.”
