DURHAM — A Lewiston driver escaped apparent injury after falling asleep at the wheel early Thursday morning on Route 136.

Sgt. Jim Jakes of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said Hani Mohamed, 21, of Tall Pines, was driving north on Route 136 after completing a night shift at L.L. Bean in Freeport and apparently fell asleep. The van drifted across the left lane into the ditch, striking two mail boxes before coming to a stop, Deputy Jakes said.

Damage was estimated at $1,500 to Mohamed’s 1998 Honda Odyssey van. The mail boxes at Brenda Tebbets’ and her neighbor Ernest Tebbets’ homes were destroyed in the 5:45 a.m. crash.
