CANAAN — Police on Thursday were investigating the shooting of a man who was found sitting wounded in his pickup truck outside the local Hell’s Angels clubhouse.

Maine State Police were called to the area along Route 23 at about 5:30 p.m. after neighbors reported gunshots, according to State Police Spokesman Stephen McCausland.

When police and emergency crews arrived, they found the victim inside his truck, parked near the entrance to the local Hell’s Angels clubhouse, McCausland said.

The victim was not identified late Thursday. Police described him as a middle-age man who lives in the Canaan area.

The wounded man was transported by ambulance to the Canaan Fire Department and was met by a LifeFlight helicopter. He was later taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor where he remained Thursday night.

The assailant is believed to have fled the area by car, McCausland said. Troopers and detectives were gathering evidence from the scene late Thursday night. Route 23 was closed in the area of the shooting.
