LEWISTON — Having a goal disallowed in the final three minutes of the first half Wednesday night was merely the frosting on an uncooked cake without sugar for Lewiston High School.

The Blue Devils were more frustrated by their failure to score against Mt. Ararat in the first 37 minutes, a segment they dominated and still concluded on the wrong end of the scoreboard.

“Everybody was being lazy passing the ball to each other the way Coach (Mike McGraw) wants us to,” said J.J. Musse. “We should have scored four goals, and we didn’t score at all.”

Musse made up for lost time, connecting on Lewiston’s first offensive run after intermission. Ahmed Mohamed and Kurtis Stocker followed suit and rallied the Blue Devils to a 3-1 KVAC victory in the seniors’ final regular-season home game at Don Roux Field.

Mohamed scored the game-winner for Lewiston (7-2-3) with 23:59 remaining. He tracked down Matt Beauparlant’s powerful throw-in from the right side and headed the ball past Mt. Ararat sophomore keeper Nate Bryant.

That sequence came only a couple of minutes after another would-be goal that could have deflated the Devils’ spirits. Freshman fullback Dan Purinton made a brilliant dive toward the left goalpost, heading away a shot by Mohamed that was ticketed for the back of an empty cage.

“There was a real sense of urgency from everyone when we were down by a goal,” Stocker said. “We should’ve had a goal (in the first half). But we came together as a team and pressured and created our own opportunities.”

Lewiston triple-teamed Mt. Ararat (5-5-2) to produce Musse’s equalizer.

Mohamed uncorked the initial shot from close range, rattling the crossbar. Jon McDonough corralled the rebound and located Musse to the left of the cage.

“We know if we string a couple of passes together and play with intensity, then good things will happen,” said McGraw. “We have the ability. We find out we can do it when we execute. But it’s like pulling teeth.”

Ali Hersi’s low, perfectly placed pass set up Stocker at the goalmouth for a one-timer and some welcome insurance with 8:41 remaining.

The offensive outburst resembled last week’s game with Cony, when the Devils broke open a 1-1 tie with seven unanswered goals in the second half.

“We get a lot of encouragement from playing at home,” Musse said.

Chris Jacques made 10 saves for Lewiston. The Eagles snuck one past with 9:43 left in the first half when a midfielder threaded the needle with a long pass to David Roux, leaving him one-on-one with Jacques.

Shobow Saban appeared to answer for the Devils when he headed in another of Beauparlant’s textbook throw-ins. But the official closest to Saban ruled his lunge at the ball a dangerous play, nullifying the goal.

“The disallowed goal was just that, a disallowed goal. It did take away a little bit of momentum,” McGraw said. “Being Senior Night, we were excited in so many different ways. It was a good night for everybody. I’m glad we won.”
