100 years ago, 1909

With low rates on all the railroads into Lewiston during Merchant’s Week Dec. 6-11 many people are planning to visit friends and look over the big manufacturer’s exhibit at City Hall. It will surprise even some of the local people to see how varied are the manufacturing interests of Lewiston and Auburn.

50 years ago, 1959

Dr. Joseph M. Mendes of Lisbon Falls has been appointed to the Central Maine General Hospital staff. A longtime resident of Topsham, Dr. Mendes is a graduate of St. Dominic’s High School, Lewiston, and received his medical degree from Ottawa University. He established private practice at Lisbon Falls in 1958. Dr. Mendes will serve in CMGH’s general practice department.

25 years ago, 1984

Dogs picked up by Auburn’s animal-control officer are now taken to Sabattus, where, at a cost of $4 a day per dog, they are sheltered in an unheated, concrete kennel. Under an agreement before the City Council Monday, however, the Lewiston-Auburn Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals would provide the city with shelter services at its Hotel Road facility at a cost of $1,000 a month.

City Manager Charles A. Morrison is recommending to the councilors that they approve the arrangement with the SPCA on a three-month trial basis, January through March, to give both parties a chance to see how the arrangement works.
