AUBURN — On Sunday, Dec. 20, Gregory Guay of Sabattus will give a classical guitar recital in memory of his brother, Ryan, who died in January 2006. He will play compositions by Bach, as well as some Spanish and Brazilian guitar, and will be joined by a friend or two who play violin and  flute.

The free concert will be at 5 p.m. at First Universalist Church, 169 Pleasant St.

Donations will be accepted for a scholarship for a Maine student pursuing automotives in post-secondary school. Lisa Pengel created the scholarship in honor of her son, who was enrolled in the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. So far, three scholarships have been awarded to Maine graduates.

When Ryan died, more than a dozen friends and family members, including Gregory, shaved their heads into mohawks in his memory, because he often sported a colorful head of spiky hair.

Gregory graduated from the College of Charleston with a bachelor of fine arts degree, receiving departmental honors and awards for instrumental excellence in classical guitar performance. He has played in the Young Artist Series of Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival and for St. Luke’s Recital Series. He taught as a registered Suzuki guitar instructor at Charleston Academy of Music. He is now pursuing a master’s degree in classical guitar performance at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., and is teaching as a graduate assistant.
