FARMINGTON — Skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes Monday at Titcomb Mountain to celebrate opening day at the ski area in West Farmington.
“It’s going very well,” manager Karleen Andrews said. “It’s not too busy because it’s a Monday and some of the areas schools don’t have it off. So its given us an easier day.”
The Farmington Ski Club and volunteers have completed making snow on three of the primary trails, which is about 30 to 40 percent of the mountain’s terrain, she said.
In all, the mountain has 17 trails, but snow is only man-made on about 10, Andrews said.
This week, the slopes will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 22, and Wednesday, Dec. 23; and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 24. The mountain will be closed on Friday, but open back up from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Christmas vacation hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, through Wednesday, Dec. 30. The mountain will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1.
“We’re pleased we’ve got enough snow. We’ve got a good base started and it has been cold enough to make snow,” Andrews said. “Our cross country trails are limited to variations of conditions. They’re skiable. They’re covered , it is just not midwinter conditions.”
If people are interested in taking Learn to Ski lessons, she asks that they make reservations 24 to 48 hours in advance by calling the lodge at 778-9031, or by visiting the Web site at www.titcombmountain.com.
Spruce Mountain Ski Slope in Jay plans to open Saturday, Dec. 26.
