BETHEL — The 12th annual New Year’s Bethel, a chemical free event sponsored by the Bethel Historical Society, featured a wide variety of activities for a broad audience.

Festivities began at 5 p.m. with a community potluck supper. At 6 p.m., a Dragon Parade around the Town Common attracted dozens of youngsters and a candlelight tour at the Dr. Mason House brought a steady flow of visitors of all ages. The bonfire was lit at 7 p.m. for marshmallow roasting, which continued through the evening.

The State Street Traditional Jazz Band began a performance at 7 p.m. at the Congregational Church, where the Western Mountain Senior Players also performed. A sing-along at 10:30 p.m. at the Dr. Moses Mason House followed with Lynn Arizzi at the piano. The final event of the evening was a literal ringing in of the New Year at the town clock on Main Street with a variety of hand, sleigh and ship bells at the stroke of midnight.

Many volunteers and individual and business sponsors are responsible for the event’s success.
