100 years ago, 1910

All records for unseasonable operations were broken yesterday by Phillip Mayo of the River Road, Lewiston. Thinking that the prolonged mild weather and rain must have started the sap to flowing in the maples, he accordingly tapped 25 trees Tuesday shortly before noon. By Tuesday night, during about five hours, he had gathered 10 gallons of sap from these 25 trees.

50 years ago, 1960

Appointment of a special building committee to follow through on the proposed construction of a new junior high school for Lewiston was authorized last night by the Board of Finance.

The committee, to be named by Mayor Romeo T. Boisvert, will negotiate for the purchase of a 32-acre tract of land off East Avenue and Montello Street selected for the site, hire an architect, and select designs and building plans. Its recommendations need Finance Board approval.

25 years ago, 1985

Break dancing has again returned to the Multi-Purpose Center. The program is being offered on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. in the center’s gymnasium.

The course is open to all boys and girls 5 to 17. Classes begin Feb. 6. People may register any time before Feb. 5 by contacting the MPC rec office.
