100 years ago, 1910

Teachers at the Dingley School last evening gave a delightful subscription dancing party in Wilson’s Hall when one of the largest assemblies of the season was seen. The hall was prettily decorated in red and white, the school colors. Music was furnished by Pettingill’s Orchestra. Robinson catered.

50 years ago, 1960

An era of modern transportation will end for the Twin Cities next Friday night when the last regularly scheduled passenger train pulls out of the Lewiston railroad station at 9:48 p.m.

The new Maine Central Railroad passenger train schedule, arranged to meet a recent decree of the Maine Public Utilities Commission, brings to an end the railroad passenger train service for the Twin Cities.

After next Friday night, only freight trains, workhorses of the railroad, will use the steel tracks through Lewiston and Auburn.

25 years ago, 1985

Lewiston Principal Carroll Scribner on Monday outlined some of the problems facing the Multi-Purpose Center School but praised teachers and a growing number of parents who are working to improve the inner-city school.

The School Committee met at the MPC as part of its regular tour of city school buildings. The MPC serves 328 students in  kindergarten to grade 2.

Scribner said the school is changing. He noted that at a recent parent-teacher night, more than 80 percent of the student’s parents visited with teachers.
