LEWISTON — HealthSteps, part of the prevention and wellness services offered through St. Mary’s Health System, offers a wide range of classes with the core membership fee as well as a variety of specialty classes, including:
Advanced Bellydancing: Imari (Lisa Cummings), will lead the class. Participants should dress comfortably in workout clothing. Stockings or bare feet are recommended. Class will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, March 8 to 29, in the Resident Dining Room, St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion, 102 Campus Ave. Cost is $45.
Beginner Pilates: Kerrie Poulin will instruct the mat class based on the teachings of Joseph Pilates. Pilates is an alternative workout designed to increase one’s fitness level. Students can expect full body strengthening with particular emphasis on the core musculature. Students should wear non-restrictive attire and bring a mat. Class will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, March 4 to April 15 (no class on March 25), in the Lepage Large Conference Room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost is $60.
Intermediate/Advanced Pilates: Kerrie Poulin will instruct the mat class. Class will be held from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Thursdays, March 4 to April 15 (no class on March 25), in the Lepage Large Conference Room. Cost is $60.
Gentle Exercise: The class is designed for those with arthritis, recovering from cancer or any other individual who desires a mild form of exercise. It helps improve range of motion, strength, posture, balance and coordination. Class will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 30 to April 29, in the Resident Dining Room. Cost is $22 or free with core membership.
Mommy and Me Postnatal Yoga: The class will offer participants a way to reconnect with and strengthen their bodies after it has healed from delivery. It is designed for mothers and their infant children, eight weeks to almost walking. Classes will offer an opportunity for mothers to bond, breathe and stretch with babies and a chance to connect with other mothers. Gentle hands- on yoga and massage for babies, as well as postures to help mother and baby continue the bonding process will also be visited.
Class will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 24 to March 24, in the Lepage Large Conference Room. Heidi Audet, RYT, will instruct. Cost is $60.
Osteoball: Exercising with the osteoball is easy to learn, non-intimidating, and uses the same simple isometric resistive techniques astronauts use to keep fit while in space. The class is designed for individuals recovering from cancer, those who have bone and joint related conditions and other individuals who desire a mild yet effective form of resistance training. Class will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 30 to April 29, in the Resident Dining Room. Cost is $22.
Prenatal Yoga: The class is geared for women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Expectant mothers will learn postures and breathing techniques to invite deep relaxation, conquer fatigue, stretch, strengthen and prepare their changing bodies for childbirth. Preregistration is required. No prior yoga experience is necessary. Yoga students need to bring a yoga mat and strap, pillow, one or two blankets and a water bottle, and should avoid eating a heavy meal one hour before class.
Class will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 24 to March 24, in the Lepage Large Conference Room. The Feb. 10 class will meet in the Lepage Small Conference Room. Cost is $50.
Racquetball: The fast-paced sport that is easy to learn and play. Specific time slots are available for registration Monday through Friday, on the hour for an hour, from 6 a.m. to noon.
Cost is $19 for the entire winter/spring session with core membership. Without core membership, cost is $55 for one hour, once a week, or $88 for one hour, twice a week, from March 1 to May 28.
Senior Fitness: The one-hour class will provide participants with a safe and effective workout that includes a warm-up, cardiovascular component, resistance training to build strength, balance and flexibility exercises. Class will meet from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. or from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, March 29 to April 30,in the Resident Dining Room. Johanne Healey will instruct. Cost is $30.
T’ai Chi: In the introductory class, participants will learn a simple form and supportive exercises to promote health and longevity. Additional effects of t’ai chi include increased balance, better circulation, improved coordination and reduced blood pressure. Class will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 23 to March 30, in the Resident Dining Room. Kurt Young will instruct. Cost is $50.
Tennis: Those interested can play singles or doubles. Specific time slots available for registration from Monday to Friday include: 6 to 7 a.m., 7 to 8:30 a.m., 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon. Singles can register for a maximum of two hours each week; doubles, maximum of three hours each week.
Cost is $18 for the entire winter/spring session with core membership. Without core membership, cost is $88, from March 1 to May 28.
