TURNER – Directors of Regional School Unit 52 cut another $124,000 from the 2010-11 working budget Thursday night, eliminating freshman sports and the Imagination Destination program.

Superintendent Darlene Burdin said officials are focusing on the best education program for students while remaining sensitive to the economics of the communities of Greene, Leeds and Turner. She said officials are making tough decisions.

“We are asking people to do more for less and I thank you for making sacrifices,” she told the approximately 50 people attending the budget session.

More than $500,000 had already been cut from the proposal before Thursday. Eliminating freshman sports raised concerns from some. Many spoke in support of keeping enough coaches to have all of the sports students wanted.

“I believe the people of Turner would pay not to have services cut,” Jennifer Simmons said. Her comment brought loud applause.

Budget workshops are set for March 11 and 25, with the board voting on a spending plan on April 8.
