LEWISTON — The SeniorsPlus Education Center, 8 Falcon Road, will offer the following classes:
AARP Safe Driving Course: A refresher driving safety course from AARP. The class will qualify participants for an insurance discount. Thursday, March 11 or April 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $14.
The following free fitness class trials will be held on Friday, March 5 or Tuesday, March 16: 8:30 to 9 a.m., yoga and balance; 9:15 to 9:45 a.m., pilates; 10 to 10:30 a.m., zumba and toning; 10:45 to 11:15 a.m., yogalates; 11:30 to 11:45 a.m., Nordic walking. Participants may sign up for as many class trials as they’d like. Space is limited.
Sunrise Yoga: Tuesdays, March 23 to April 20 (no class April 6), from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Louisa Abarno will instruct.
Yogalates: Participants will work on a yoga mat and blend traditional yoga and pilates movements to increase strength and flexibility. Tuesdays, March 23 to April 20 (no class April 6), from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Instructor is Louisa Abarno.
Nordic Walking: Walking with specially designed poles, the class is a total body workout, strengthening the core and reducing joint strain and fatigue. Poles will be provided. Tuesdays, March 23 to April 20 (no class April 6), from 11 a.m. to noon. Instructor is Louisa Abarno.
Yoga and Balance: Using chairs for standing and sitting exercise, the class will incorporate yoga stretches and balance movements. Fridays, March 12 to April 2, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Louisa Abarno will instruct.
Pilates: Usinga a yoga mat, the class will focus on the pilates breathing techniques. Fridays, March 12 to April 2, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Louisa Abarno will instruct.
Zumba and Toning: The class will take the fun of the zumba dance rhythms and combine it with low weight toning sticks. Fridays, March 12 to April 2, from 11 a.m. to noon. Louisa Abarno will instruct.
Cost for the above fitness classes is $32 for a four-week series of classes, $10 for an individual class or $50 for a pass to any and all classes taught by Louisa Abarno.
Gentle Yoga: A flowing style of yoga that will combine deep breathing with a set of sequences of moves that calms and strengthens. Fridays, March 5 to March 26, from 3 to 4 p.m. Cost is $32 for the series or $10 drop in fee for each class. Heidi L. Audet will instruct.
Attendees may also try pastel art for free. Artist Meridith Hicks will demonstrate working with pastels and answer questions about her upcoming class, Working with Pastels. The free introduction will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, March 15.
Working with Pastels: No experience is necessary. Artist Meridith Hicks will teach the basics of working with pastels and participants will have the opportunity to create their own piece. Mondays, March 22 to April 12, from 9 a.m. to noon. Space is limited to eight people. Cost is $60 for the series plus materials.
Caregiving: Environmental Considerations: David Currier, from the Alzheimer’s Association, will provide guidance on how to adapt the home environment to support the changes dementia presents. The free session will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 23.
Older workers and the Job Search: Mary Kozicki LaFontaine from the Lewiston CareerCenter will discuss the job search for older workers, what the job market is like, and what resources are available to help find work. The free class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 24.
