MONHEGAN — Applications are being accepted for the Monhegan Artists’ Residency for emerging Maine artists. Formerly called the Carina House Residency, the program provides a visual artist with the opportunity to live and work on Monhegan Island for five weeks.

The residency program provides living quarters with studio space and a $500 stipend. This year the residency will run from Aug. 28 to Oct. 2. Only Maine residents are eligible to apply.

The program seeks to support emerging visual artists working in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture or the digital arts. An important goal of the program is to enhance the careers of serious artists who have yet to win wide recognition. Quality of work is the primary criterion for selection.

A jury of art professionals will select the 2010 artist. This year’s judges are painter and printmaker Alison Hildreth; Nathaniel May, director of the Space Gallery; and painter Marguerite Robichaux, a former Carina House Residency artist.

Applications must be postmarked by Thursday, April 1. For guidelines, a history of the residency program and a list of past residents, visit www.monheganartistsresidency.org. Applicants will be notified by mid-May.
