PORTLAND — On Tuesday, March 16, Portland Ovations will present the St. Lawrence String Quartet, which has received many high honors, including two Grammy nominations.

Celebrating 20 years together, the St. Lawrence String Quartet not only regularly performs traditional quartet repertoire with joy and a pronounced respect for the composer, but also expands the works of living composers.

The quartet’s concert will, for example, open with Beethoven’s String Quartet in C-sharp Minor and close with a string quartet by New England native John Adams, one of the most respected living composers who writes in the classical tradition.

There will be a master class from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, with University of Southern Maine students that is open to the public. There is a $6 observation fee. Interested persons may call 780-5151 for more information.

A free lecture by composer Dr. Elliott Schwartz on Adams’ new work will be held from 6 to 7 p.m.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.at Hannaford Hall on the USM campus. Tickets are $38 for general admission, $10 for students. Tickets are available through PortTix at 842-0800 and online at www.portlandovations.org. They will be available at the door, subject to availability.
