ROCKPORT – The Auburn Youth Hockey Ducks, a girls’ 12-and-under team, won four straight games to sweep the Midcoast Classic round-robin tournament.

Three of Auburn’s victories were shutouts by three different goaltenders. Competition included the Casco Bay Black Bears, Bangor and Houlton.

Amanda Sappington backstopped a 2-0 victory over Casco Bay in the opener. Madison Derosa got Auburn on the board at 2:59 of the second period, with an assist from Katya Fons. Mikahla Searles added insurance at 1:15 of the third, Savannah Shaw assisting.

Auburn answered Bangor’s two third-period goals with two of its own for a hard-fought 4-2 triumph. Fons put the Ducks on top with two unassisted goals in a 21-second span of the second period. After Bangor’s rally, Tori Sanford tallied the game-winner with an unassisted, end-to-end effort at 8:44 of the third. Fons set up Brianna Doucette’s goal at 10:56. Shaw was the winning netminder.

The offense again kicked in after scoreless first period as Auburn sped to a 5-0 blanking of Houlton. Lindsay McGray mustered two second-period goals, one courtesy of Saige Arseneault and another from Haley Frohlich. Fons struck for two more goals in the third, Arseneault and Frohlich assisting. Arseneault tacked on an unassisted goal. Sanford posted the shutout in the cage.

Arseneault’s unassisted goal at 8:46 of the third period stood up as the final margin in a 1-0 title game verdict over Casco Bay. The Black Bears carried play for much of the final two periods, but Shaw came up with several big saves. Emma Martineau, Sanford, Dasha Fons and Abby Roy were strong defensively for the Ducks.

Nine different players scored a point over the weekend. Fons led the Ducks with four goals and two assists.
