LEWISTON — L/A Arts will host two different art workshops at its DownStage space beginning the end of March. A weekend Portraiture Workshop will be taught by portraiture artist Pat Chandler and a six-week Oil Painting Workshop will be instructed by artist Michael Ranucci.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 20 and 21, Chandler will continue where she left off in her February workshop, this time focusing on color. Full color pastel portraits will be taught in the workshop, with studio work and demonstrations on Saturday and a model all day on Sunday.

Appropriate for beginners as well as those with some experience with drawing and/or portraiture, students will start with the study of the skull and methods of rendering features on Saturday. Learning to mix fresh flesh tones will make the class a good lead-in to any other painting medium for portraits.

The workshop will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days. The workshop is restricted to a maximum of 15 students.

Chandler, a teaching artist, lives and works out of Norway. She has taught numerous portraiture workshops including several at Maine College of Art and most recently at L/A Arts. Examples of her work can be seen in the Community Gallery at L/A Arts, 221 Lisbon St. Any questions regarding specifics in the workshop should be directed to Chandler at 743-8033 or e-mail pat@chandlerfineart.com.

The Oil Painting Workshop will be taught by local artist Michael Ranucci and will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, March 22 through April 26. The workshop will take students through painting a still life or landscape. Participants will work with the visual elements and fundamentals first developed by the old masters through developing their work from a preliminary charcoal drawing, to the under painting and finally to the full color palette.

Each participant will leave with a developed oil painting and insights into an approach which can be utilized in any future oil painting. Basics such as scumbling, velatura, glazing and other techniques will be revealed by doing in each participant’s painting.

Ranucci will have quality photographic reference available for subject of paintings, however any participant who would like to provide their own subject reference should contact him at 754-3531 or e-mail mjranucci@roadrunner.com.

Participants will need to have basic oil painting colors and supplies, specified medium, easel and a few other items. Ranucci will contact all participants with a more detailed list prior to the first meeting.

His three previous workshops at L/A Arts were well received, with many students returning for subsequent sessions. His individual attention and hands on demonstrations make the class a worthwhile experience for a wide range of skill levels. The workshop is restricted to a maximum of 10 students.

Both workshops will be held at L/A Arts newly renovated DownStage which was created with support from Empower Lewiston and the Davis Family Foundation. The entrance is on Canal Street Alley, off Pine Street. Parking is provided, free of charge, in Camden National Bank’s parking lot on Canal Street.

Participation fee for either workshop is $120 each person. Both workshops require a minimum number of students to sign up. Students need not have attended the prior workshops to enroll in either workshop.
