ORONO, Maine (AP) — A University of Maine panel has proposed eliminating, downsizing or merging more than a dozen different academic programs to save money.
The Academic Program Prioritization Working Group says its recommendations could save more than $12 million over three years beginning in July 2011.
Among the proposed changes: eliminating the Department of Public Administration and all programs; eliminating music and music performance majors and the music master’s program, as well as theater major; and downsizing the master of arts in teaching program.
President Robert Kennedy says he retains some hope that the cuts may be reduced by boosting enrollment or through other means.
