No offender has occupied a cell at the Auburn police station so far this year and even the freights have failed to yield their quota of hobos since January 1st. “We have started off with a clean slate,” said City Marshal Rowe yesterday, “and it is in our interest to keep it so.”

50 years ago, 1960

Miss Constance Landry, who has been employed in the office of Lewiston City Tax Collector Adrien O. Anctil the past several months, yesterday was hired as clerk-stenographer in the municipal office by the Board of Health and Welfare. She succeeds Miss Carmelle Laplante, who recently resigned. The salary of $39 weekly will remain the same, the board announced.

25 years ago, 1985

Following through on negotiations begun by Food Town Inc., Hannaford Bros. has reached a tentative agreement to rent the city-owned parking lot across Spring Street from the supermarket.

Under a lease agreement to go before the Auburn City Council Monday, the supermarket would pay the city $1764 a year to rent the parking lot, figured at a cost of $7 per parking space per month.

Food Town President Michael Abromson began negotiations to rent the 20-space lot for employee parking as a part of his expansion plans for the supermarket, and Hannaford Bros., which recently bought the Auburn Food Town, plans to use it the same way.
