100 years ago, 1910

Figures given out of the office of the Secretary of State show that the business in the way of registration of automobiles in the past year was the largest that it had been for any year since the Law of the Road, so-called, went into effect in 1905. The total receipts from the registration of automobiles during the past year was $3,256.

50 years ago, 1960

Marius B. Peladeau, Lewiston Daily Sun reporter, stepped down yesterday as Maine state chairman of Sigma Delta Chi, professional journalistic fraternity.

He was succeeded by Charles C. McGillicuddy of Cape Elizabeth, an Associated Press reporter at Portland.

Maine has no professional chapter but steps were taken recently to form a chapter and obtain a charter. Membership is open to journalists in the daily and weekly newspaper, magazine and radio-TV fields.

25 years ago, 1985

Professor Charles Winfield of Blood, Sweat and Tears fame will offer “The Dream Machine.” a course on the history of rock ‘n’ roll, at the University of Maine at Augusta’s Lewiston-Auburn Center.

Winfield is a graduate of Julliard School of Music in New York City, where he received a bachelor’s degree in 1965 and a master’s in 1966.

Winfield played with Blood, Sweat and Tears, a progressive jazz group of the late 60s and early 70s.

He has conducted professional clinics and lectures and is assistant music professor at UMA.
