LEWISTON — Students from the Lewiston Regional Technical Center have joined with Volunteers of America and the Major League Baseball Players Trust to form an Action Team.

“This is a dream come true for our program,” said Glenn Michaels, director of marketing and community engagement for Volunteers of America Northern New England. “Through LRTC we can reach students from a variety of regional high schools and one home-schooled student who are participating in the program.”

To date, more than 150 high schools and 20,000 students across the nation have participated in the program designed to increase youth volunteerism and community service.

The students received their new Action Team T-shirts donated by the players and were presented with a $1,000 donation by the Timothy J. Mynahan Foundation. The foundation was created to honor the former Lewiston High School honor student and graduate who was killed by a drunk driver.

According to foundation representative and Tim’s brother, Joe Mynahan, “During his life, Tim demonstrated consistent excellence in academics and athletics. We are proud to honor his memory through this program that serves students in the high school he loved.” Mynahan said that the donation will be used to help the students with materials and other needs and for a trip to Fenway Park in May.

According to LRTC Instructor Mario Pascarelli, current and future projects for the Action Team include fixing vandalized baseball dugouts, working on the town gazebo on Bartlett Street, rebuilding a city tractor and other projects to enhance the community.

The Major League Baseball Players Trust also recently donated a van to Volunteers of America to help homeless youth in the area.  For more information about the Action Team, contact Michaels at 373-1140, ext. 216, e-mail [email protected].org or visit www.voanne.org.
