LEWISTON — The folks at St. Mary’s Nutrition Center have been planning all winter long for their growing season. They have announced the following programs for the spring and summer.

Soil Tests and Lead Awareness: Monday, April 19, from 4 to 5 p.m., at the Franklin Pasture Community Garden. Attendees will see how to take a soil test and learn possible options for gardening safely even with contaminated soil.

Organic Garden Pest Prevention: Wednesday, May 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center. Participants will learn the basics of organic gardening, share tips and tricks for preventing pests and make their own pest repellent to take home.

Preventing Tomato Blight: Monday, May 24, from 5 to 5:30 p.m., at the Franklin Pasture Community Garden. Information will be available about how to prevent tomato blight.

Eat Your Weeds!: Monday, June 14, from 5 to 6 p.m., at the Franklin Pasture. Attendees will practice identifying some of the common weeds found in gardens and will learn which ones are good to eat.

Composting Basics: Monday, July 12, from 5 to 6 p.m., at the Franklin Pasture. Participants will learn the basics of composting and how to start and maintain a compost pile.

Build Your Own Composting Worm Bin: Wednesday, August 11, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center. Participants will learn how to turn garbage into super-rich soil, how to compost in a small apartment and how to grow worms for fishing. Attendees will build a worm bin to take home.
