AUBURN — Rodney M. Morant of Lewiston pleaded not guilty Friday to charges that he robbed three convenience stores last week and tried to rob a fourth.

Morant, 39, was returned to the Androscoggin County Jail after entering his plea at an arraignment in Androscoggin County Superior Court.

Held on $50,000 bail, Morant was ordered to avoid drugs and alcohol, steer clear of the stores he is accused of robbing and submit to random searches, should he make bail.

Police say Morant used a knife to hold up convenience stores in both Lewiston and Auburn during an overnight spree. He was arrested when a Lewiston police officer interrupted a robbery attempt at a Big Apple store on Lisbon Street.

Morant later told investigators he needed money to pay off drug debts, police said.
