FARMINGTON — Fifteen students have been named spring 2010 Michael D. Wilson Research Scholars by the University of Maine at Farmington Undergraduate Research Council.
The program awards funds that underwrite student research project expenses and provides a strong foundation for the highest level of student scholarship, critical thinking, intellectual independence and faculty mentoring.
The awards are funded by a gift from Michael and Susan Angelides, Stonington, Conn., in honor of their good friend and UMF alumnus Michael D. Wilson, class of 1976, who died shortly after graduating.
The students are nominated by a UMF faculty sponsor and, after a competitive selection process, are chosen by the Undergraduate Research Council.
The recipients include: David Bersell, Derry, N.H.; Erin Blair, East Orland; Sean Chase, Mechanic Falls; Davyd Collinson, Farmington; Travis Cyr, Waterville; Jade Forester, Dresden; Chris Herlan, Brunswick; Kelsey Lowe, Woonsocket, R.I.; Samuel Niman, Buxton; Gwendolyn Perry, Falmouth; Renee Scott, Winchester, N.H.; Robert Sherman, Johnston, R.I.; Katie VanDerburgh, Gorham; Michael Webb, Farmington; and Ethan Wiley, Sangerville.
A senior with a double major in music/arts and psychology, Chase is exploring music’s effect on consumer behavior. His faculty sponsor is Alison Terry, UMF assistant professor of psychology.
A senior majoring in history with a minor in political science, Collinson is examining the regional economic impact of the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad. His faculty sponsor is Allison Hepler, UMF professor of history.
A senior with an individualized studies major with a concentration in political science and psychology, Forester is analyzing media coverage of the economy and commentaries on consumer culture in the U.S. Her faculty sponsor is Scott Erb, UMF professor of political science.
A senior majoring in geology, Webb is conducting a petrographic and geochemical investigation of the Rome-Norridgewock pluton in west-central Maine. His faculty sponsor is David Gibson, UMF professor of geology.
