BETHEL — Selectmen will learn Monday that the state wants to replace decking on a bridge that carries routes 2, 5 and 26 traffic over Railroad Street. Their meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m.
They will also discuss advertising for people to be on a committee to develop a regional wind power ordinance, and possibly increasing parking at the popular Davis Park along Route 26 and the Androscoggin River.
The Maine Department of Transportation has scheduled a public meeting for 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at the Bethel town hall at 19 Main St., to discuss future plans for the bridge. Representatives from MDOT are also seeking comments, concerns and suggestions from the public, and are expected to answer any questions about the project.
Concerned that Bethel doesn’t have any ordinances to regulate wind power development, Town Manager Jim Doar has asked selectmen to OK advertising to seek people who can be appointed no later than June 21 to a multitown ad hoc committee.
That came out of the second of two meetings this spring between Bethel, Greenwood and Newry officials who believe that such a committee could develop a common ordinance tailored toward specific town needs that could then be adopted separately by each town at town meetings, enabling local control.
In a memo to selectmen, Doar stated that the group decided that the best way to develop an ordinance is to ask selectmen in each of the three towns to appoint three people from each town to an ad hoc committee.
On the parking issue, Doar said he would like selectmen to consider shortening the pathway from where it begins at Davis Park playground to where the Porta Potties are currently located, and filling the area where the paved pathway is now.
In a memo to selectmen for Monday night’s meeting, Doar stated that a barrier could be set near the fence separating the playground from the pathway to allow two rows of parking on the parcel with a “driveway” through the center, or a wider separation could be provided that would limit parking to one row, accessed through the same “driveway.”
Other agenda items include:
• Possibly approving a letter of support for Black Mountain’s pursuit of a grant to complete major modifications to Broomhall Stadium to better conform to a competition setup recommended by national and international Nordic ski operations. The resort wants to complete the modifications in time for the 2011 U.S. Cross Country Championship competition in early January that is expected to bring 400 to 500 competitors and Olympians, and to boost the local economy during the weeklong event, Doar said.
• Possibly approving many proposed amendments to the following ordinances: Entertainment; Sewer and Water Use; Traffic, Parking and Pedestrians; Signs; Site Plan Review; and Subdivision of Land.
The board is also expected to execute a warrant for the SAD 44 budget referendum, to approve the annual town meeting warrant and to discuss the town financial report.
A public hearing on the proposed ordinance changes will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, in the town office.
