CAPE ELIZABETH — Historic Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, will remain free to all visitors if voters get their way.
In an advisory referendum Tuesday, Cape Elizabeth residents voted 2-1 against a Town Council-supported plan to begin charging parking fees for visitors. The park is home to one of Maine’s best-known lighthouses, Portland Head Light, which was built in 1790.
The Town Council last winter adopted a fee schedule to offset the costs of maintaining the park, but critics said the park should remain free.
With Tuesday’s election results, the council now has the option of reversing or keeping its earlier decision to charge fees.
