WINTHROP – The Winthrop red Sox plated seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a tie game and cruise to a 9-4 victory over the Auburn White Sox in Pine Tree League baseball.
Eric Palleschi cranked a two-out, two-run triple in the first inning to give Winthrop (6-0) the early lead.
Auburn (1-4) chipped away with one run each in the third and fifth innings before the Red Sox erupted in the fifth against Sean Cheetham. John Bourque had the key hit in the inning with a line-drive single to left, producing two runs.
The White Sox scored twice in the sixth, with Jim Wasenski picking up an RBI double.
Winthrop’s Torey Carr picked up the win from the mound, but the victory was marred by his possible season-ending left ankle injury in the sixth. Carr and Matt McCarthy doubled up on hits for Winthrop. Wasenski and Tim Levesque were repeat offenders for Auburn.
