Tamarah Gaudet and Matt Thurston, both of Mexico and sophomores at Mountain Valley High School, completed this white pine and ash canoe on Monday. Student Matt Marston, not pictured, also helped out. Chris Decker, center, the assistant principal at the high school, taught the canoe building class over the past year or so. Most materials were donated by local businesses, and the GEAR-Up program also helped sponsor it. The students planned to launch the canoe into the Swift River late Monday afternoon. Tamarah hopes to attend Region 9 in the fall in the building program. Matt Thurston isn’t sure yet, but he’s thinking of attending Region 9 in the metal trades program.
