Many friends of Miss Grace Bower, principally members of the club of which Miss Bower is a member, were present last evening at the home of the Misses Cora and Ida Smith, when the guest of the evening was given a handkerchief shower.
To each gift was attached a verse, some lengthy, others short, but all witty and appropriate. Miss Bower was the recipient of many pretty handkerchiefs.

Over the years, many Auburn residents have become “hot under the collar” at any reference to the fact Auburn is only a suburb of Lewiston, but a letter received yesterday at Auburn police headquarters was going just a step too far.
Police Lt. Leslie F. Stewart received a communication from the Enforcement Division of the Maine State Liquor Commission.
It was addressed to “Sgt. Leslie Stewart.” Stewart has been a lieutenant since 1955.
But the rest of the address was the clincher.
It said: “Auburn Police Department, LEWISTON, Maine

SABATTUS — Sabattus Fire Chief Paul LeBel has submitted a letter of resignation to the town’s board of selectmen.
In his letter, LeBel cited increased work responsibilities in his private job — not in the voluntary fire chief position — as the reason for his decision.
LeBel joined the fire department in 1963 and has served as chief for the past eight years.
Selectman Geoff Herman said that the board accepted LeBel’s resignation with “very much regret.”
