DEXTER – Matt McCarthy lashed out five hits and Brett Witherell belted a three-run home run to power the Winthrop Red Sox past the Pittsfield Pirates, 11-5, in Pine Tree League senior baseball.

Witherell’s homer staked Winthrop (9-2) to an 8-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Pittsfield (2-7) scored three times in the bottom of the fourth. Gary Morin and Ryan White had RBI singles in the rally.

But the Pirates inched no closer. Winthrop turned four  as Winthrop’s defense turned four double plays behind pitcher Dennis McHugh, who went the seven-inning distance to improve to 4-0.

Winthrop pounded out 17 hits on the night. McHugh joined McCarthy as a repeat hitter along with Mike House, Sam Shain and Dave Ricker Jr. White and John Luellen repeated for the Pirates.
