FARMINGTON — Farmington Downtown Association is looking for nominations of some “really great, awesome people.”
As part of the expanded Summer Fest planned for July 30 and 31 in downtown Farmington, the group has added more activities including awarding the Farmington Gem 2010 Award, said Ron Gelinas of Mainestone Jewelry.
People are welcome to pick up a nomination form at his Broadway jewelry shop to nominate a Farmington person for the new award. The form asks for the nominee’s name and a few facets or individual character traits. The group seeks someone who has “given of their self, time, service, compassion, empathy, love of Farmington and the people.”
Nominations will be judged by a jury of three and are due back as soon as possible, he said.
The gem award will be presented to the winner by state Rep. Tom Saviello, R-Wilton, on Friday at about 5:30 p.m. following a Festival Fun Blast of games with Farmington postmaster Sue Jones.
Other new events on the schedule include a Historical Society display of Farmington’s Fire of 1886 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at the Old North Church.
A flower show and contest is planned from 7 to 11 a.m. on Friday. Arrangement entries may be dropped off at 107 Church St.
A taste of homemade pies and old fashioned desserts, “Pie on the Porch,” will be available from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Holman Parish House on Main Street and a street dance from 7 to 9 p.m. featuring Shepherd’s Pie ends the first day’s activities.
A variety of children’s events are planned Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the front lawns of the Pierce House and Henderson Memorial Baptist Church on Main Street.
A summer Fun Kid’s Parade workshop takes place from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Henderson Memorial Baptist Church where children can make a hat, instrument or decorate a bike with supplies provided in preparation for a Summer Fun Kid’s Parade to start at noon. The parade, led by Unicycle Max, begins at Old South Congregational Church.
