WESTBROOK – The Gray-New Gloucester Junior Little League softball team won the state championship Wednesday night, defeating Bangor, 15-5.
G-NG will travel to West Haven, Conn., next week to compete in the regional tournament, beginning August 5. The regional champion will earn a berth to the World Series in Kirkland, Wash.
The girls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of several walks and a timely hit by Emily Hotham.
Bangor notched a run in the bottom of the first, but G-NG matched it in the second on an RBI single by Sam Libby to score Sandy Ricardi.
G-NG added four runs in the third inning on several walks and two errors to make it 8-1. The floodgates opened firther with six runs on six hits in the fourth.
Ricardi’s RBI double plated Libby Gisel in the fifth. Bangor mustered four runs in the bottom of that frame.
