BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The American Red Cross is putting out an urgent call for northern New England residents to give blood.

Officials say they’ve had a difficult time recruiting enough blood donors this summer to meet the needs of hospitals and their patients.

All blood types are needed but especially type O negative. Officials say that’s because type O negative can be given to patients with any blood type and is often given to trauma victims.

Blood drives are scheduled around Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine this month, with two in Rutland and South Burlington, Vt., on Tuesday. Several were planned Tuesday in Portland, and Bangor, Maine. Others are planned Wednesday in Shelburne and in Colebrook and Lebanon, N.H.
